The Battle of Solferino, fought on 24th of June 1859 was the last battle at which both armies were commanded by their monarch; the French army commanded by Napoleon III and his Allies Victor Emmanuel II and his Sardinian Army were victorious over the Austrian Army commanded by Emperor Franz Joseph.

Dr. Gilbert Gaul frequently went hunting with his good friend up around Fall Creek Falls state park. On one particular day, they were hunting deer and tracking for some time his friend stopped and rested a while. He leaned his gun against a tree and stopped to take a short break. Dr. Gaul, being an exceptional artist, saw a moment to capture an incredible image. There at that site, pulled out a piece of paper and made an outline sketch of his friend. Later, after he returned to his office, he sat down and painted the Pickett. The sole Confederate Picket. The irony of this painting is that his friends name was Ulysses Simpson Grant Walling, and is the Great Great Grandfather of Rhonda Morgan who we would llike to thank for sharing this information.

After the capture of the Magazine on 16th September 1857, at the Siege of Delhi, the mutineers staged a counter-attack. Several times they set light to the thatched roof adjacent to the perimeter wall. The actual Magazine was a building in the centre of the compound, but it had been blown up by the British earlier in the siege, leaving the perimeter wall intact. At that time there were buildings between the Magazine and the Red Fort. Lieutenant Renny of the Bengal Horse Artillery mounted the wall and flung 5.5 inch shells, with their fuses lit, into the midst of the enemy, although he was under heavy fire from the walls of the Palace (the Red Fort) and Selinghur (an outlying fortification). For this action he was later awarded the Victoria Cross. I have depicted men of Renny's 5th (Native) Troop, 1st Brigade, Bengal Horse Artillery lighting shells with a portfire. Soldiers of the Belooch Regiment (in green uniforms) are handing these up to Renny. Other soldiers of HM's 61st Regiment, which had captured the Magazine that morning, are seen lining the wall and attempting to put out the fire in the compound. Some are in khaki and some in shirt sleeves. In the hot weather at the Siege of Delhi, most British troops wore their white summer uniforms, often dyed locally to produce varying shades of khaki, sometimes described as a slate-grey blue colour. I have depicted Renny, who was 31 years old, with his pouch belt worn over his left shoulder, and his Undress sword belt (as described in the Standing Orders for the Bengal Horse Artillery). He and his men wore their forage caps with a cover and a neck curtain for protection from the sun.

As the spearhead of Army Group North, 6th Panzer Division had deployed two Kampgruppe across the Dubyana river as jump off points for the drive towards Leningrad. Prior to the ensuing battles for the bridgeheads General Solyalyankin, commander of 2nd Tank Division, infiltrated a single KV2 and some infantry across the river to interdict the German supply road to Rasyeinyia. For two days the Soviet tank fought off all attempts to clear it from the road (including a night attack by German sappers) in the process destroying a convoy of supply trucks, a battery of the new Pak38 anti-tank guns, and an 88mm gun. It was only the combined efforts of a platoon of PZ35(t)s who distracted the lone tank to its front while a 88mm AA gun scored some eight hits from the rear that finally knocked it out. as the Germans inspected the silent KV they were stunned as the turret once again began to move, a quick thinking engineer dropped a few grenades through the 88 holes in the turret and finally silenced the monster.

No one knows for certain whether the two great fighter aces Douglas Bader and Adolf Galland actually fought each other in a one-on-one combat, but it is thought highly likely that they did as the famous Tangmere Wing led by Bader regularly found itself dueling with the Bf.109s of JG.26 led by Galland. Their great rivalry came to an end in August 1941 when Bader was shot down over St Omer, but these two heroes were to become close friends after the war, each having the utmost respect for the other.

The highest scoring US pilot of the Second World War, Richard Bong, is depicted in his personal P.38J Marge, claiming just one of his 40 confirmed victories. Insisting that he was not the greatest of marksmen, it was Bongs habit to manoeuvre to impossibly close distances before opening fire on his opponents. His eventual total may well have been greater than 40, as a further 8 probables could be attributed to him, together with 7 damaged. He was killed whilst testing a P.80 jet for the USAF in August 1945.
