Ayrton Senna in his #27 car on his way to winning the 1990 Monaco Grand Prix, leading the Tyrell of Jean Alesi and the McLaren of Gerhard Berger out of Mirabeau and into the Station Hairpin. The historic number 27, made famous by Gilles Villeneuve at Ferrari, had been adopted by McLaren for the start of the 1990 season after Ferrari took the numbers 1 and 2 for their cars. Senna won the 1990 word championship in this car, but never drove the 27 car again after switching to number 1 for the next season.

In July 1879 during the Afghan Campaign. Ayub Khan and an army of over 35,000 warriors were marching onto Kandahar. The British force under the command of General Burrows decided to fight. With a force, no more than 3,300 strong, took up position in a tiny hamlet of Mahmudabad, within 2 hours many of the British had been slaughtered, but with nightfall the remnants of the brigade retreated. Oberscharfuhrer Ernst Barkmann in Panther 401 accidentally found himself as the spearhead of the 2nd SS Panzer Divisions night assault on the crossroads at Manhay. Initially mistaking a lone Sherman of US 7th Armoured Division as that of his own commander, he pulled alongside the enemy tank, and only realised his mistake when he noticed its unusual red interior lights. In a brief close quarter fight he managed to destroy the M4 with the Panthers anti-personnel mortar (Panzergranate) He then proceeded along the moonlit forest roads past a succession of surprised American units to Manhay and on towards Liege, having left several destroyed vehicles in his wake. His appearance caused havoc in the US defences, culminating in a rout.

7th December 1941, Pearl Harbor. Ken Taylor and George Welch took off in their P-40 Warhawks from the isolated Haleiwa airfield in western Oahu in an attempt to intercept Japanese aircraft. In the first US action of the war (excluding American Volunteer Group pilots), Ken Taylor is seen diving on to a group of Aichi D3A 'Val' dive bombers making their way to the already battered US fleet at Pearl Harbor. Ken was slightly wounded during the action, and without George covering his tail, he would likely have been shot down. Both George and Ken claimed to have shot down three enemy aircraft.

Opened in 1932, Ryde airport became the principal airport for the Isle of Wight, with routes being operated to destinations as far away as Croydon, Bristol and Shoreham, as well as a regular commuter service that took in Southampton, Bournemouth and Portsmouth. This painting depicts a typical day early in 1936 when aircraft of both Portsmouth, Southsea and Isle of Wight Aviation Ltd and Railway Air Services were using the airport, in this case, Airspeed Courier G-ADAY and De Havilland Dragon Rapide G-ACPR City of Birmingham respectively. The airport closed officially in 1939, but may have been used sporadically after the war. The site of the airport is now occupied by Tesco and McDonalds.
